Smart Faceplate

Turning a passive server faceplate into an intelligent rack-mapping interface.

Award-nominee concept design for turning server faceplate into an intelligent registration and rack-mapping interface. The Smart Bezel never shipped to production, but the exploration earned UX Design Awards recognition, design patents as well.

Nutanix's mission centers on simplifying IT infrastructure across private, public, and hybrid cloud. When we investigated end-to-end experience gaps, internal data center administrators surfaced a workflow that was still manual, fragmented, and error-prone.

The problem

Installing and tracking hardware in Nutanix data centers required administrators to jump between disconnected interfaces, re-enter the same node details in multiple systems, and maintain rack maps by hand. Each server install became a potential point of failure. Not because of technical limits, but because the workflow was brittle.

The team needed a way to register nodes, confirm rack position, and surface health without asking administrators to carry clipboards.

My role

I was the inventor and on the hackathon team that conceived the Smart Bezel. I led the interaction model for turning a passive server faceplate into an active registration surface, paired with a companion mobile app for guided rack scanning and mapping. With the help of Ken, Melina from the design team and talented engineers we were able to drive this into a solid prototype to showcase.

Process & decision rationale

We started by shadowing data center administrators through real install workflows, then scoped a hackathon prototype that paired physical and digital touchpoints:

  • Shadow before sketching. We mapped every handoff — serial capture, rack labeling, health checks, and inventory updates — to find where manual entry duplicated effort.
  • Physical anchor, digital workflow. Instead of another admin console, we embedded NFC identifiers and an LED status strip in the faceplate so the server itself became the registration point.
  • Guided scanning over free-form entry. The mobile app walked administrators rack-by-rack, flagged out-of-order scans, and used accelerometer input plus scan sequence to infer rack location.
  • Prototype under hackathon constraints. We prioritized a demonstrable end-to-end flow — tap, scan, map, confirm — over production-ready hardware integration, which kept the concept testable in days.

Key capabilities in the concept: one-tap node registration, guided rack scanning, out-of-order scan detection, automatic rack-location mapping, node health visibility, and handoff into administrator systems.

Outcomes & evidence

In hackathon testing, pairing NFC registration with guided scanning reduced manual data entry and consolidated what had been three separate tracking steps into one physical-digital flow. The concept did not ship to production, but it validated a direction for hardware-assisted operations.

Reflection

The Smart Bezel reminded me that the most useful hardware concepts start with operational reality, not feature lists.

Shadowing administrators exposed gaps no dashboard review would have surfaced. Pairing a faceplate with a mobile workflow also clarified where physical affordances beat screen-based admin and where a concept can earn patents and awards without becoming a shipping product.
